Estate Planning Basics

Probate, health care and estate tax laws have recently changed!   Learn about the enactment of the new "HIPAA" law and how it may prevent your powers of attorney from working properly.  Find out how to prevent your assets from going through probate, how to protect them from estate and capital gains taxes, how to retain control of your affairs, and how to protect yourself against the costs of long term care. Discover the dangers of using joint accounts and quit claim deeds as estate planning tools.  Learn about medical and financial powers of attorney, wills and living trusts. The course is taught by attorneys from Estate Planning Services, P.C.  Attendees will receive a free personal affairs organizer.

Long Term Care/Medicaid Planning

Did you know that 50% of persons 65 years of age or older will spend some time in a nursing home and that the average monthly cost of nursing home care in Michigan is $6,191.00?  Add to that the fact that neither health insurance nor Medicare pay for such care and you will understand why people fear losing their life savings to such costs. In this class you will learn what options you have to pay for long term care costs and about the NEW Medicaid eligibility rules that became law on February 8, 2006.  Discover how these new, harsher rules prevent you from receiving Medicaid benefits if you have made any gifts within five years of applying. The class will also discuss what options you have to be cared for at home and how to pay for such care. The course is taught by attorneys from Estate Planning Services, P.C., who are members of the Elder Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Advance Medical Directives/Living Wills

Did you know that living wills are not valid in Michigan?  Learn what Michigan law says about Advance Medical Directives, Patient Advocate Designations, Living Wills, Patient Surrogates, Guardianship and the rules controlling organ donation.  Discover how these medical decision making options work and how they interact with the HIPAA medical privacy rules.  Know your rights and what the law requires you to do to retain control over these very important and personal decisions.
